About August House

boy from The Sundown Kid: A Southwestern Shabbat

For over thirty years, August House has curated a highly acclaimed, award-winning selection of picture books, story collections and resource books from the world’s great oral traditions.

Our mission is to publish and champion creative writers working in folklore, oral tradition, and narrative literary forms, preserving and expanding culturally rooted stories from around the world. Through books and publications, August House supports writers and cultural storytellers whose work sustains global storytelling traditions.

August House stories are grounded in diversity and have been selected from cultures across the globe. By focusing on folktales, August House publishes stories with a unique advantage: they have already survived countless retellings across generations. Long before a story appears in print, it has been tested in live performance and communal sharing—shaped by some of the most discerning audiences in the world.

Working closely with writers, storytellers, and folklorists, we honor the origins of each story while presenting it in forms that invite continued discovery by readers today.

August House titles have been recognized by many of the most respected organizations in publishing, librarianship, bookselling, and storytelling, reflecting a long-standing commitment to editorial quality, cultural integrity, and literary excellence.
