Review — Go to Sleep, Gecko!

By Julie Raulli
Bloomsbury — 1/1/2007

We had a collection of children’s literature in our home long before our four-year-old son was born. I harbor a deep appreciation for the humor and beautiful illustrations characteristic of the best of this genre, and it is a joy to now share these with my son. One of the best recent additions to our collection is Go to Sleep, Gecko!, a wonderful Balinese folktale adapted by storyteller Margaret Read MacDonald. With the help of bright, colorful illustrations by Geraldo Valério, MacDonald skillfully employs repetition to retell the tale of a gecko that cannot sleep because of the light made by a group of fireflies. While the moral of the tale is bluntly stated at the end of the book, young and old readers alike will delight in reading about how Gecko comes to understand that “this world is all connected.
