Four New Story Cove Titles to Launch this Spring
Atlanta, GA - March 1, 2008
This spring August House will add to its growing collection of timeless stories by launching four new titles in its Story Cove line of multicultural stories. August House is launching four new Story Cove books simultaneously in print and online with animated stories and in-depth lesson plans. As with the other titles in the Story Cove line, these illustrated stories have been carefully selected from the oral tradition of different cultures and then adapted to actively engage young readers.
The Story Cove Collection now includes 18 titles and is designed so young children (4 to 8 years old) can actively experience the stories. Each of these new 8" x 8" books is supported by an animated movie version along with activities and lesson plans available at www.storycove.com.
August House is the only publisher that simultaneously releases stories as books and online with animated movies and lesson plans. Each story is supported by multiple-leveled, lesson plans using differentiated learning methods to match the national standards defined by NCTE and IRA. In addition, to support the multimedia theme of Story Cove, each of these stories will be performed by the authors in live appearances at schools and libraries throughout the year.
Anansi and Turtle Go to Dinner–In this trickster tale from Africa, Anansi learns the value of being a good host. He also learns the truth of the old saying, “what goes around, comes around.” The story is told by award-winning authors Bobby and Sherry Norfolk (Anansi and the Tug o’ War) and is illustrated by Baird Hoffmire (The Clever Monkey).
Growing Gold -In this story from India, a farmer’s three lazy sons don’t want to work, they just want to make a lot of gold. When their mother tells them about gold buried in the field, they discover the value of a good day’s work. The story is told by T.V. Padma (Padma Venkatraman), a writer and a scientist who lives south of Providence, Rhode Island. She is the author of Mathematwist (a collection of mathematical folktales), and Climbing the Stairs (a young adult novel to be published by Penguin). The book is illustrated by Tom Wrenn (The Magic Pot, A Tale of Two Frogs)
Why Koala Has a Stumpy Tail -Travel down under as Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss (A Tale of Two Frogs, Noodlehead Stories) take you to Australia. When Tree Kangaroo and Koala dig a well to get some water, Tree Kangaroo ends up doing all of the work and Koala ends up with a stumpy tail in this origin story. The story is illustrated by Tom Wrenn (The Magic Pot, A Tale of Two Frogs)
The Archer and the Sun - In this classic story from China, we learn why the sun comes up in the morning and goes down at night. We also discover why a certain farm animal is there every morning to loudly greet the sun. This tale is told by Rob Cleveland (The Drum, The Clever Monkey). It is illustrated by Baird Hoffmire (The Clever Monkey, How Tiger Got His Stripes).
