August House Showcases Two Titles from the "Dark Side" in Time for Halloween, and Beyond

Atlanta, GA — August 21, 2006

From tales that are sure to make you "jump" to stories from the Native American spirit world, August House Publishers is launching two collections of stories guaranteed to keep you looking around corners and deep into your own soul long after the trick-or-treaters have departed with the last of your candy corn.

The addition of these two new titles expands the number of scary stories to 15 titles in the August House collection.

Spirits Dark and Light — Supernatural Tales from the Five Civilized Tribes

By Tim Tingle
In the Native American tradition, there is a strong connection between the spirit world and the natural world. What happens in one has a definite impact on the other. In this collection, Native American storyteller Tim Tingle draws from the rich heritage of the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole) and brings tales from the spirit world into our world.

Tim Tingle is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. His great-great grandfather, John Carnes, walked the Trail of Tears in 1835. During 2002–2005, Tingle performed a traditional Choctaw story before Chief Gregory Pyle's Annual State of the Nation Address at the tribal gathering in Tushkahoma, Oklahoma, a Choctaw reunion that attracts over thirty thousand people.

As a concert performer Tingle delivers lively historical, personal, and traditional stories. He plays the Native American flute and accompanies himself with rattles, deer and whale skin drums, and sings Native songs and hymns in the Choctaw language.

Tingle has performed as a featured storyteller in festivals covering a thirty-state area, including the Timpanogos Festival(UT), the Bay Area Storytelling Festival(CA), the Mariposa Storytelling Festival(CA), Three Apples(MA), Corn Island(KY), the Nebraska Storytelling Festival, and the Texas Storytelling Festival.

Scared Witless — Thirteen Eerie Tales to Tell

By Martha_Hamilton and Mitch Weiss
Storytellers have always loved to tell stories around a campfire. It's the perfect setting to tell a "jump" story where the whole point is to startle the listeners and make them, well, JUMP!!!! These 13 (scary number) tales come with storytelling tips guaranteed to make listeners jump, gasp, and giggle. The publishers accept no responsibility for elevated adrenaline levels.

The award winning author team of Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss has received numerous prestigious awards including a Parents Choice Award, PLA/ALLS Top Titles recognition and NCCS/CBC Notable Book. The authors have been telling stories together as Beauty & the Beast Storytellers since 1980. This husband and wife team from Ithaca, New York leaves it up to audiences to decide: who is The Beauty and who is The Beast?

Mitch and Martha bring to life traditional folktales from around the world, stories from their own experiences and tales based on historical people and events. Their specialty is tandem storytelling where they combine their contrasting styles, swapping lines and impersonating characters.

In addition to their performances, Mitch and Martha are renowned for their school residencies during which they teach students to tell stories. As a result of their experiences in the classroom, they have produced several award winning books and recordings.

Their previous books published with August House include:

How and Why Stories

World Tales Kids Can Read and Tell, which won both a Storytelling World and a Parents' Choice Award. The recording by the same title won a National Parenting Publications Gold Award. It stands out from other recordings because, as the Booklist review noted, "[the stories] are narrated, with appealing verve, by kids. Although the estimable skills of professional storytellers are easily enjoyed, these youthful narrators serve to encourage young listeners to rediscover this oldest form of entertainment: storytelling."

Noodlehead Stories

World Tales Kids Can Read and Tell, which won a Parents' Choice Award and was named a "Notable Social Studies Book for Young People" by the National Council for the Social Studies and the Children's Book Council.

Through the Grapevine

World Tales Kids Can Read and Tell, which won a Storytelling World Award and was named as one of the "Best Children's Books of 2002" by the Bank St. College of Education.
