First August House Effort By Robert D. San Souci And New Titles By Sherry Shahan And Heather Forest Highlight Fall Releases From August House

Atlanta, GA — June 3, 2005

August House today at the BEA Expo in New York City unveiled three, colorful new picture books by acclaimed authors and illustrators — including their first book with one of the most popular children's authors in the world, Robert D. San Souci. These three new picture books will set the stage for the multimedia publisher's Fall releases.

Zigzag

World renowned author Robert D. San Souci has teamed with award winning illustrator Stefan Czernecki to produce a captivating tale about a doll searching for a home. This deeply-satisfying story begins with a doll maker who creates Zigzag from scraps. When she promises him "Some child will love you," she gives the strange-looking doll hope. But the other dolls and stuffed animals in the shop don't want such an "unusual" toy around and they force Zigzag to leave. Clinging to that promise — that a child will someday love him — little Zigzag sets out to find a home.

San Souci is the award-winning author of the Short & Shivery series of tales, as well as more than 80 picture books based on folktales from around the world, including The Talking Eggs and The Faithful Friend. He also created the screen story for the Disney animated film, Mulan. Illustrator, Stefan Czernecki has written and illustrated more than 30 books for children, including: the recent award winning book from August House, For Sure, For Sure.

Feathers

Words can teach, heal, and inspire and, when misused, careless words can be a cruel weapon, as anyone who has ever been a victim of a rumor know all too well. In award-winning author Heather Forest's fifth book with August House, a woman learns that hurtful words — like the feathers blown from a burst pillow — are impossible to retrieve. Illustrator Marcia Cutchin's dynamic imagery complements the text with vivid colors and lifelike characters.

Forest is the author of two recent Parent's Choice Award-winning picture books from August House: Stone Soup and A Big Quiet House. A professional storyteller for twenty-five years, she has been named to the prestigious Circle of Excellence of the National Storytelling Network.

Cool Cats Counting

Sherry Shahan's 29 previous titles for children run the gamut from Alaskan dogsled adventures to Spicy Hot Colors, the 2004 August House picture book that was so well received by booksellers and librarians that it spawned the development of Cool Cats Counting as a companion. The creative team of Shahan and Paula Barragán have collaborated again to create another innovative bi-lingual picture book for August House. Boldly and colorfully illustrated by the Ecuadorian artist Barragán, the book incorporates the same vibrant visual style that was so popular in the groundbreaking Spicy Hot Colors.

Cool Cats Counting rocks and rolls through animals and numbers with infectious verve. Each spread uses a different set of animals to allow young readers to count out the number. Barragán not only clothes the animals in vibrant Latin colors, she then shows them dancing to authentic, lively rhythms on each page.
