State Curriculum Standards

In 1983 the National Commission on Excellence in Education published a report titled A Nation at Risk. This report served as the catalyst for reforming the educational system of the United States by initiating the need for a content and standard curriculum plan. Standards serve to define a common set of expectations, and many believe a correlation exists between high expectations and improved performance.

Today, states have identified content standards and required levels of performance in all subject areas including Visual Arts, Dance, Life Skills, Technology, Math, Science, Language Arts, and History.

State standards provide an accountability system whereby content, delivery, and achievement outcomes of educational services are measured. Under the auspices of the United States Department of Education, each state develops, shapes, and determines the educational content and required achievement standards for their state. All states do not share the same requirements and course offerings or the same level of mastery achievement.
