Learning Center Home

Welcome to the August House Learning Center. We believe our stories are far more powerful if they are experienced in different ways. Listening to or reading a story book can be a moving experience for a child. A story book takes on new meaning when young minds are actively engaged in making a puppet, drawing a scene, playing a game, baking food or creating a song from a story.

When a child actively experiences a story, they engage their imagination at a deeper, more profound level. The plot, the characters, even the location becomes more personal in a way that is quite different from passively watching or listening to a story.

We developed the Learning Center to provide additional curriculum resources that will help engage young learners and emerging readers in a variety of ways. In addition to being great entertainment, our stories serve to build strong character education foundations.

Since these multicultural tales come from around the world, they help young learners explore and understand other cultures. These stories also enhance our sense of community and help us build connections with the world around us.

Discover new ways to explore storytelling by utilizing our resources. Every month we will post new material. We look forward to receiving your feedback and recommendations to better serve your needs.

This Family Literacy Guide has been developed by a team of educators and librarians to help parents and caregivers strengthen literacy in the lives of their children from birth to grade 12.

Character Education

The tradition of storytelling provides a means for students, classrooms, families, and communities to encourage the development of good character.

State Curriculum Standards

State standards provide an accountability system whereby content, delivery, and achievement outcomes of educational services are measured. Under the auspices of the United States Department of Education, each state develops, shapes, and determines the educational content and required achievement standards for their state.

Leveling

Book leveling is a systematic approach to evaluating features of text, including language usage, writing style, story elements, concepts, content, length, and illustrations. Assigning reading levels is not an exact science, but rather a method of comparing books.

Multiple Intelligences

Over the last twenty years, Howard Gardner at Harvard University's School of Education has identified and categorized nine different kinds of intelligence. By identifying a child's particular strengths, successful accommodations and strategies can be defined for each child in a classroom.

Story Cove

This section features animated stories for 4 to 8 year old children. We've surrounded these tales with puzzles, games and projects based on the themes in each story. You will need high speed internet access and Flash software installed on your PC to play the animations.

Student Stories

With our school storytelling program, we work with multiple classrooms at numerous schools. Our instruction meets the developmental goals of each individual teacher as we integrate storytelling into their existing curricula.

Lesson Plans

Our lesson plans are designed to engage, educate and entertain through story.
